thtough.jpg (7683 bytes) Most cyclists know of Peter Keen as the coach of Chris Boardman, but not so many realise that Peter too was a talented cyclist as a boy.   I do because he competed in the GHS 10 the year I went in for it and he won the national final in 1980 in a GHS record time of 21:30 . . . not bettered in the competition until 1991.  Why am I telling this story?  About 8 years ago I met Peter who was giving a lecture at a coaching conference in Derby and I asked him why with such natural talents himself he had chosen to coach rather than to compete.  His answer "I realised that I didn't have the mind of a champion".  I didn't really buy that answer until I read this book.

Toughness makes you take a careful look at an often overlooked area of cycling - phychology and in particular the mind of the champion.  Its a useful little book.

This book is a technical description of wheel building.  Jobst Brandt explains the scientific and engineering background behind wheels and their applications, using clear and concise language.  He is a bit dismissive of lightweight wheels and only skims over nonstandard spoking patterns, deep-section rims and other technological advancements but teaches the basic principles.

Nicknamed "the Bible" by many wheelbuilders - this book has everything you need to know on wheels but beware, it is highly technical.

It is dry reading.  You can have my copy for a mere £5Contact me

I brought this book when I was concerned about cholesterol and the damage I might have been doing to myself internally.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  Split into 5 sections, the book deals with the wider aspects of "heart health", some of which, might surprise you.  Dr. Barnard looks at the obvious: Nutrition, Stress and Activity but also at Environment and Attitude, drawing 10 "ways" or principles in each section.  My personal favourites . . . ah, well that would be telling!

Did you know noise raises your heart rate?

This is a superb manual of circuit training.   Packed with photos of how to do a wide range of exercise whilst avoiding injury.   This is ideal for cyclists because it emphasises all-round fitness and thereby incorporates the "oh-so-trendy" core fitness that the comic has recently banged on about!  The book takes you through a careful progression of more demanding exercises coving all the basics you'd expect to see, like warm up, warm down and stretching. Some exercises make use of equipment (like a step or maybe even a barbell) but all can safely be done in the confines of your home.  Its a total bargain on Amazon at the moment at £7.69 so why not make it part of your winter training library . . . and routine
