  •  Tim Wilcock wins both stages to take overall crown
  • Fiona Burnie first lady
  • Lewis McEvoy fastest Clarion rider overall - also wins Peter Foster Memorial Trophy

Tim Wilcock (GS Metro) defended his title at the Sunderland Clarion two stage hill climb on Sunday in Kibblesworth and Lamesley at the South end of the Team Valley in Gateshead. Wilcock came into the competition in good form after winning the previous weekend’s G.S Metro Hill Climb.

Wilcock, who set the course record last year on the 2 mile long stage 1, didn’t let the damp weather deter him as he rode to an impressive 15 second lead on stage 1 clocking a time of 7:10.6, ahead of Cestria C.C’s Michael Openshaw (7:25.7) who came in ahead of Colin Atkinson (EMC) with a time of 7:31.5. While Bishop Auckland’s Fiona Burnie clocked 8:37.4 to take the lead in the women’s competition. Amongst the host club riders it was Lewis McEvoy who took the spoils on the first climb with a time of 8:15.5 good enough to take 10th overall going into stage 2, and to claim the club’s Peter Foster Memorial Trophy. Behind him Neil Wallbank clocked a time of 9:17.8, and Tom Guy 10:07.3 on the tough climb of Silverhills.

Stage 2 saw riders tackle a new climb this year, climbing out of Kibblesworth Village for just short of a mile before a slight downhill carried the riders and their aching legs to the finish. Again it was Wilcock who took the spoils, clocking a time of 3:18.7, as the sun dried out the roads. This time beating Muckle Cycle Club’s Matthew Smith, who clocked 3:25.5, to the honours. While Michael Openshaw clocked 3:32.5. Smith’s ride was enough to see him to climb up on to the overall podium, moving ahead of Openshaw and Atkinson to take second overall behind the unassailable Tim Wilcock. Openshaw took third overall with a ten second advantage over Atkinson, who took home the prize for the first veteran over 50 after narrowly missing out on third.

Meanwhile Neil Wallbank pipped McEvoy for the honours of first Sunderland Clarion rider on the second climb clocking 3:55.4 against McEvoy’s 3:56.8. While Tom Guy completed the Kibblesworth climb in 4:34.8. McEvoy hung on to 10th overall, while Wallbank climbed up to 15th, and Guy finished 20th overall.
