My name is Tony Gibson. I've recently taken over from Allan Smith as the club secretary and am currently responsible for the club kit ordering and distribution. I started cycling a little more seriously in 2008. I, like many, orginally had a mountain bike, but was doing more on-road than off-road miles, so invested in a second hand road bike from eBay. I quickly found out how much fun cycling could really be, and enjoyed pushing myself and the number of miles I could do. I remember the first time I managed 40 miles without stopping - I had to go to bed for a lie down!

I joined the club in January 2009 on a 'club run'; it was great to finally be cycling in company. Many of the members on that inaugural ride have been with the club for a number of years, and it was obvious that they were very experienced. I instantly felt included and soon began regular outings on a Sunday.

Back in my early days, Sunderland Clarion only had one ride per week - the Sunday Club Run - which is still the core activity of the club. A few of us soon realised that we would like to ride together more frequently, so we decided to start the Thursday training rides from the Bungalow cafe on Roker seafront. This route is similar to a mid-week ride the club used to do over 30 years ago. This increased in popularity and is now a very well attended mid-week event, especially in the summer. As the membership has grown, the needs of those members has also increased. We devised a faster training ride as an alternative to the 'normal' club ride on a Sunday, which has diverged again to allow for a 'faster' club ride

Sunderland Clarion has changed in many ways over the few years I have been involved in it. It still has similar ideals, with riders of all abilities now catered for. I still look forward to every ride and meeting my friends who keep me going when the riding gets tough (i.e. when the gradient increases!). I enjoy the chat and the banter, and especially enjoy a good cafe - with the obligatory slice of cake!

If you're thinking of joining a cycling club, and have found this site, then you've come to the right place. Come along and see what we can offer - I can assure you that you'll enjoy your cycling even more.
