  • Gordon takes 4th
  • Shepherd takes 2nd in Ladies

Sunday saw the final North East hill climb of the season as riders took to the challenge of Quarrington Hill in County Durham for Houghton CC’s Open Hill Climb. Despite the strong winds that were making riding difficult for many across the region, the generally sheltered hill allowed for some strong performances as riders looked to improved their position in the regional league.

Representing Sunderland Clarion were Steve Gordon, Ingrid Shepherd, Tom Guy and Matt France, with Shepherd and Gordon using this as their final tune up before the National Hill Climb this weekend at Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire. Gordon put in a strong performance to take fourth overall in a time of 2:11, which also saw him take 2nd in his age group. Overall it was Mark Harrison who took the spoils for the hosts, stopping the clock dead at 2 minutes, enough to beat GS Metro’s Ben Lane by 6 seconds, while Jonathon Bayley (Gosforth RC) took third place narrowly from Gordon with a time of 2:10. Shepherd continued her strong season with another second place in the ladies competition as well as a first in her age category, with a time of 2:41, 5 seconds behind Angela Hibbs (Tyneside Vagabonds). While Guy came in with a 2:33 for 16th and France clocked a 2:39 to finish joint 21st.

Within the North East league Shepherd came out second to Hibbs amongst the ladies, while Gordon came in at 7th overall and 3rd in the over 40’s category. The league saw Michael Jones (Derwentside CC) take the win, from Mark Harrison and Carl Donaldson (GS Metro). With Cestria CC’s Michael Openshaw taking the vetrans prize from Ben Lane and Gordon. Sunderland Clarion meanwhile were the regions third best club with Shepherd, Gordon and France as the club’s three best performers over three events scoring to see them finish behind winners GS Metro, Gosforth RC and Tyneside Vagabonds. Now the focus turns to the National championships for the Clarion duo and the regions best.
