David Craig

< Back to Trophies & Awards
Dave had joined the club at the age of 43 in the early 1990s after getting back in to cycling a few years previously, and he proved to be as equally at home on a mountain bike as he was on a road bike. Although competitive cycling could not be described as his first love, he nevertheless took part in the summer time trials organized by the club at Leamside and at Chester Moor shortly after joining the club.  His strong riding in those events was soon rewarded when he won a handicap award in the 1992 Dennis Pearsall Memorial ‘25’ starting from Chester Moor.

And yet again rewarded in the same season when he and Ian Taylor were placed second behind the winning team of Martyn Wallbank and Alan Short in a club 25 miles team time trial on the same Chester Moor/Lanchester course.

Although Dave’s racing was not on a regular basis, he nevertheless achieved times of 1hr 1min 56sec and 1hr 3min 04sec during the 1995 season, which gave him the award of Sunderland Clarion fastest veteran that year. Further to this it can be added that Dave was always a staunch and willing helper in events put on by the club when not actually riding himself, and he and his wife Anne were ever-present at the club’s Annual Prize Presentation and at other club social functions. As members know, Dave was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an industrial-related illness, in 2001, and sadly he died from this in February, 2002.

Since Dave’s death Anne has spent much of her spare time helping, with others similarly affected, to raise funds for research in to mesothelioma ,an illness which still continues to claim lives.  A total of £100,000 was required to set up a specialized unit of research in to this illness and amazingly, in such a relatively short time, this total was not only achieved but exceeded by a further £12,000 by May 22nd 2005 when a cheque for £100,000 was handed over.  The remaining £12,000 together with a further £4,000 raised is to be put in to further funding, the purpose of which was to be decided later that year.
